Joseph Pilates, the founder of Pilates, said "above all, learn how to breathe correctly. Breathing is the first act of life".
Breath is one of Joseph Pilates' guiding principles. Breath brings oxygen in to the body and oxygen is amazing stuff did you know?! 80% of all our metabolic energy comes from oxygen. You can survive only one minute without it. Stress, anxiety and depression can deplete the body's oxygen. Oxygen helps with concentration, alertness and memory. No wonder your Pilates Instructor wants you to breathe during your Pilates classes! In Pilates exercises we link movement and breath and this can sometimes be confusing. Simply put, we tend to cue breathing out when the spine flexes as this engages the deep abdominal muscles. In fact, any time a core connection is required, we exhale.
Exhaling is a wonderful way to relax muscles and promote movement of the spine. At the end of the day we just want you to breathe. Try not to hold your breath. Concentrating on your breath promotes relaxation.
Breathe deeply and fully as breathing is living.
